Aphrodisias Ancient City

Our day begins with a journey into the heart of ancient Caria, in western Anatolia, to the remarkable ruins of Aphrodisias — one of the most beautifully preserved and least crowded archaeological sites in Turkey. Located near the modern village of Geyre, roughly 100 km inland from the Aegean coast and about 230 km southeast of İzmir, the site rewards the scenic drive with an extraordinary glimpse into a city that was once a major center of art, sculpture, and worship in the ancient world.

As its name suggests, Aphrodisias was dedicated to Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, and at the heart of the city stood her magnificent temple, home to a cult statue unlike any other in the ancient Mediterranean — the Aphrodite of Aphrodisias, depicted in a distinctive, richly adorned style found nowhere else. The city flourished for centuries as a renowned school of sculpture, and the exceptional quality of its marble workshops can still be admired today in the intricately carved reliefs, statues, and friezes scattered throughout the site and displayed in its outstanding on-site museum.

Among the highlights awaiting visitors are the Tetrapylon, a monumental and elaborately decorated gateway; the vast Stadium, one of the best-preserved of its kind anywhere in the ancient world, once capable of seating around 30,000 spectators for athletic games and gladiatorial contests; and the Sebasteion, a striking temple complex dedicated to the Roman emperors, decorated with an extraordinary series of relief panels. In Late Antiquity, as Christianity spread through the region, the city was renamed Stauropolis, meaning "City of the Cross," reflecting its transformation into an important Byzantine center. In recognition of its exceptional state of preservation and historical richness, Aphrodisias was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2017.

Pamukkale (Hierapolis)

In the afternoon, we travel to one of Turkey's most iconic natural and historical wonders: Pamukkale, meaning "Cotton Castle" in Turkish, where cascading white travertine terraces formed by mineral-rich thermal waters create a landscape unlike anywhere else on earth. Rising above these dazzling white cliffs are the ruins of Hierapolis, an ancient spa city founded in the Hellenistic period within classical Phrygia, whose therapeutic hot springs have drawn visitors for well over two thousand years.

The healing properties of Hierapolis's thermal waters were already famous by the 2nd century BC, when the city developed into a flourishing health resort, attracting the sick and wealthy alike from across the ancient world in search of a cure. Today, visitors can still explore the atmospheric ruins of this once-grand spa town, including the monumental Roman Baths, the colonnaded main street, and the remarkably well-preserved Roman Theater, whose ornate stage façade and sweeping rows of seating offer a striking reminder of the city's former splendor.

Hierapolis also holds deep significance in early Christian history as the site of the martyrdom and burial of Philip the Apostle, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus. His octagonal martyrium, along with the sprawling necropolis nearby — one of the largest and best-preserved ancient cemeteries in Anatolia, containing hundreds of sarcophagi, tombs, and burial monuments — offers a moving glimpse into the city's role as both a place of healing and a site of pilgrimage. Together with the surreal beauty of the travertine terraces, where warm mineral waters cascade down natural stone pools, Pamukkale-Hierapolis was recognized by UNESCO as a mixed natural and cultural World Heritage Site, celebrated for both its geological wonder and its historical depth.
