1. The House of Virgin Mary

Tucked away in the lush, forested slopes of Mt. Koressos, just a short drive from Ephesus, this humble stone dwelling is one of Christianity's most cherished pilgrimage sites. According to tradition, after the crucifixion of Jesus, the Apostle John brought Mary to Ephesus to protect her from persecution in Jerusalem, and it was here, in this quiet retreat overlooking the Aegean hills, that she is believed to have spent her final years.

The house remained largely forgotten until the 19th century, when a German nun, Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich — who never left her convent and had never visited Ephesus — described the location and structure of the house in extraordinary detail during her mystical visions. Decades later, explorers followed her descriptions and discovered the ruins of a small stone house at precisely the location she had described, sparking renewed interest and pilgrimage to the site.

Today, the house has been restored and consecrated as a chapel, drawing visitors of all faiths — Christian and Muslim alike, as Mary (Meryem) is also deeply venerated in Islam. The site has been formally recognized by the Vatican as a place of pilgrimage and has been visited and blessed by several popes, including Paul VI, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI. Inside, a small altar and a statue of Mary create a serene, contemplative atmosphere, while just outside, a "wishing wall" covered in cloth and paper notes reflects the hopes and prayers left behind by countless visitors. A nearby sacred spring, believed by many to have healing properties, adds another layer of spiritual significance to this peaceful sanctuary.

2. Ephesus Ancient City

Ephesus stands as one of the most magnificent and best-preserved ancient cities anywhere in the Mediterranean world — a place where the grandeur of the Greco-Roman era comes vividly to life. Once a thriving port city and one of the largest urban centers of antiquity, with a population estimated at up to 250,000 at its peak, Ephesus was a major hub of trade, culture, politics, and religion for centuries.

Walking along its marble-paved Curetes Street, visitors pass beneath the shadow of monumental structures that once defined daily life in this classical metropolis. The breathtaking façade of the Library of Celsus, one of the most iconic ruins in the ancient world, stands as a testament to Roman architectural ambition. The Great Theatre, carved into the hillside and capable of seating up to 25,000 spectators, was not only a venue for performances but also, according to the Bible, the site where the Apostle Paul preached and faced an uproar from local silversmiths whose livelihood depended on the worship of the goddess Artemis (Acts 19).

Beyond its architectural splendor, Ephesus holds profound significance in early Christian history. It was here that Paul lived and taught for nearly three years, establishing one of the most important churches of the apostolic era — the very church addressed as one of the Seven Churches of Revelation. Tradition also holds that the Apostle John spent his final years in Ephesus, and the ruins of the Basilica of St. John, believed to house his tomb, still stand on a hill overlooking the city. Every stone, column, and mosaic here offers a tangible connection to a city that shaped not only ancient civilization but also the early spread of the Christian faith.
